Italian food for Easter

Easter, as we saw in the previous post, is certainly the most heartfelt holiday of the year for Italians together with Christmas. On the blog of Teach me Italian in this article we will learn more about Easter culinary traditions and how Italians celebrate Easter on the table.

From a culinary point of view, each Italian region tends to celebrate Easter in a different way and offering delicacies of all kinds, whether sweet or savory. There are therefore many traditional foods that are prepared and shared with friends and relatives to celebrate friendship and renew the resurrection of the Lord. Among the typical foods we cannot fail to mention the Easter lamb, one of the most typical dishes of Italian Easter, often prepared roasted or stewed. In some regions, such as Sardinia, it is cooked whole on an outdoor grill. The Torta Pasqualina is another of the traditions of this time of year. It is a savory pie stuffed with spinach, ricotta, eggs and cheese, typical of Liguria.

Then we find the Easter pizza, a sweet focaccia, typical of Umbria and Marche, which contains boiled eggs and cheese and which recalls the tradition of poor food typical of simple and tasty peasant eating. At the same latitudes is particularly loved the coratella, a dish based on lamb or veal entrails, cooked together with eggs and vegetables. You have to move a little further south to taste the Roman artichokes, a typical side dish of Easter in Rome, based on artichokes cut into slices and cooked with garlic and mint.

Desserts are the real highlight of Easter, consumed everywhere among friends and relatives. The Easter dove is a sweet cake in the shape of a dove, a symbol of peace and resurrection, typical of Northern Italy. Easter eggs are chocolate eggs are a sweet symbol of Easter in Italy. They are often decorated with Easter motifs and it is not Easter without a child having received at least one as a gift from the family.

These are just some of the examples of typical Italian foods during Easter. Culinary traditions vary greatly from region to region, but in general Easter in Italy is an opportunity to taste special dishes and celebrate together the feast for the resurrection of Jesus.
