How was the night of the Oscars 2023 for Italy?

The night of the Oscars 2023 was one of the most anticipated editions of recent years, with a series of films and performances that captured the attention of the whole world. The event, which as every year took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, was not kind to Italian cinema, which returned home this year with broken bones. In this article on the Teach me Italian blog we will find out how the night of the Oscars 2023 went for Italy but also to whom the main awards assigned by the Academy went in what, for world cinema, is the most anticipated event of the year.

The award for Best Picture was won by "The Power of the Dog", directed by Jane Campion. The film, which tells the story of two brothers who ranched cattle ranches in Montana in the '20s, received wide praise from critics for its direction, cinematography and performances by lead actors, Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst. The Best Director award was also given to Jane Campion, who won her second career Academy Award.

The award for best actress was won by Lady Gaga for her performance in "House of Gucci", a film directed by Ridley Scott about the true story of the famous Italian fashion brand. The award for Best Actor was won by Will Smith for his performance in "King Richard", a film based on the story of the father of tennis players Venus and Serena Williams.

The award for Best Supporting Actress was won by Ariana DeBose for her role in "West Side Story", while the award for Best Supporting Actor was won by Troy Kotsur for her role in "CODA". The award for best foreign film was won by "Titane", a French film directed by Julia Ducournau. The award for best animated film was won by Disney's "Encanto", while the award for best documentary was won by "Flee", a film that tells the story of a man who tries to escape his past in Afghanistan.

The 2023 Oscars ceremony was also an opportunity to pay tribute to many personalities from the world of cinema who have left us over the last year. These include director Richard Donner, actor Ned Beatty and composer Ennio Morricone. But, speaking of Italians, how was the night of the Oscars 2023 for Italy? Very bad, we can say.

The ceremony left the Italian team without prizes. Back without statuettes the director Alice Rohrwacher, long given as favorite, Oscar nominee for the live action short The Pupils, beaten by An Irish Goodbye by Tom Berkeley and Ross White. Nothing to do even for the veteran Aldo Signoretti in the Elvis make-up and hairstyling team: the award went to makeup and hairstyling by Adrien Morot, Judy Chin and Annemarie Bradley for The Whale. There were also other Italians somehow in the race: the producers Ilbe by Andrea Iervolino and Lady Bacardi and We Do It Together by Chiara Tilesi for Tell It like a Woman, a collective film by 7 directors including Maria Sole Tognazzi, competing for best original song Applause by Dianne Warren won instead by Naatu Naatu from the Indian film RRR. And there was also the actor Lorenzo Zurzolo at the Oscars protagonist of the film Eo by Jerzy Skolimowski among the candidates for best international film, whose award was won by Nothing new on the western front by the German Edward Berger.
